Three days in Egypt gives you the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and Alexandria. That’s it. No Luxor, no Nile cruise, no Abu Simbel. Trying to add those means you spend more time in a bus than at the sites.

This tour works for people who land in Cairo with a long weekend, or who are passing through and want to see the two cities that matter most in the north.

What you actually see

Day one starts at the Giza Plateau. We get there when the gates open at 8 AM. By 10 AM the tour buses arrive and the place turns into a parking lot. Your guide handles tickets and walks you through the Valley Temple, the Great Sphinx, and the three pyramids: Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure.

Then the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). The GEM is the new museum near the Pyramids, and it houses the full Tutankhamun collection. Unlike the old Tahrir museum, the GEM has proper lighting, air conditioning, and labeled exhibits. It’s a 15-minute drive from the plateau.

Day two is Alexandria. Leave Cairo at 7 AM, arrive around 9:30. The desert road is boring but fast. In Alexandria you see the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, Pompey’s Pillar, the Citadel of Qaitbay, and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Note: the Bibliotheca closes on Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays. If your tour lands on one of those days, we swap it for the Royal Jewelry Museum or the Alexandria National Museum.

Lunch is at a seafood restaurant on the corniche. Fresh catch, grilled, with rice and tahina. If you don’t eat fish, tell us in advance and we’ll swap it for a grill restaurant.

Back to Cairo by 7 PM. It’s a long day. You will be tired. The drive is 2.5 hours each way.

Day three is the Citadel of Saladin, Old Cairo, and Khan el-Khalili. The Citadel includes the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali and views over the city. Then the Hanging Church and Ben Ezra Synagogue in Coptic Cairo. The Khan el-Khalili bazaar is a tourist market. Real Cairenes shop at other markets. But it’s worth one visit for the atmosphere.

The hotel

You stay at the Steigenberger Pyramids. It’s a 5-star property with pyramid views from some rooms. The pool is decent, breakfast is a standard hotel buffet. It’s 10 minutes from the Giza plateau, 45 minutes from downtown Cairo in normal traffic, 90 minutes in bad traffic. We chose it because it’s close to the Pyramids, not because it’s close to the museum.

If you’d rather stay downtown, we can swap to the Kempinski Nile Hotel or the Four Seasons Nile Plaza. Rates differ.

Honest notes

The drive to Alexandria is 2.5 hours each way. That’s 5 hours in a car on day two. If you get carsick, take something before you leave.

The GEM is huge. You can spend 3 hours there and still not see everything. We allocate about 2.5 hours, which covers the Tutankhamun galleries and the main highlights. If you want more time, tell us and we’ll adjust the schedule.

The Khan el-Khalili bazaar is a tourist market. Don’t buy anything on the first price.

Who this is for

  • First-time visitors with only 3 days
  • People who want Cairo and Alexandria, not Upper Egypt
  • Travelers who prefer a hotel with pyramid views
  • Anyone who wants the GEM, not the old Tahrir museum

Who this is not for

  • Anyone who wants Luxor or Aswan (book a longer tour)
  • Families with very young children (the Alexandria day is long)
  • People who hate early mornings
Day 1 Arrival & Giza Pyramids + GEM

8:00 AM — Meet and assist at Cairo International Airport. Our rep holds a sign with your name, handles the visa paperwork, and walks you to the car. The drive to Steigenberger Pyramids takes 25 minutes if you land before 4 PM, 45 minutes after.

Check-in, quick shower, then out by 10:30 AM.

Giza Plateau. Your guide handles the tickets and walks you through the three pyramids — Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure — and the Great Sphinx. The Valley Temple sits at the far end, downhill. Bring water and a hat.

Lunch at a local restaurant near the plateau. Koshari, grilled chicken, or a mixed grill.

After lunch, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). The GEM is enormous. We schedule 2.5 hours — enough for the Tutankhamun galleries and the grand staircase. If you want more time, tell your guide and we adjust.

Back at the hotel by 5 PM. Evening free.

Day 2 Alexandria Day Trip

7:00 AM — Pickup from the hotel. The drive to Alexandria is 2.5 hours on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road. Boring but fast. Bring a coffee.

9:30 AM — Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa. Underground Roman tombs. Narrow stairs, damp air, 30 minutes inside.

Next, Pompey's Pillar. It's a single column in a dusty courtyard. Fifteen minutes is enough.

Then the Citadel of Qaitbay, built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria. Views of the Mediterranean from the ramparts. The small naval museum inside is skippable.

12:30 PM — Seafood lunch on the corniche. Fresh catch, grilled, with rice, tahina, and salad. If you don't eat fish, tell us in advance and we swap to a grill restaurant.

2:00 PM — Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The reading room is the highlight. Important: the Bibliotheca closes on Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays. If your tour lands on one of those days, we swap it for the Royal Jewelry Museum or the Alexandria National Museum.

3:30 PM — Drive back to Cairo. Arrive around 6:00 PM.

Stay: Steigenberger Pyramids Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Day 3 Citadel of Saladin & Old Cairo

8:00 AM — Pickup from the hotel.

First stop: the Citadel of Saladin. The Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali is the main building. Shoes off, women cover shoulders. The terrace has a 180-degree view of Cairo. On a clear day, you can see the Pyramids.

Then down the hill to Old Cairo (Coptic Cairo). The Hanging Church, the Church of St. Sergius, and the Ben Ezra Synagogue. Small streets, real community, no vendors yelling at you.

Lunch at a local restaurant in Old Cairo.

Afternoon: Khan el-Khalili bazaar. It's a tourist market. Real Cairenes shop elsewhere. But it's worth one visit for the atmosphere and the coffee at El Fishawy. Don't buy anything on the first price.

Drop-off at Cairo International Airport. If your flight is early the next morning, tell us and we'll arrange a hotel near the airport instead.

Is this a private tour or a group tour? +

Private. You get your own vehicle, driver, and Egyptologist guide. No strangers, no fixed group schedule.

What time does the tour start each day? +

Day 1 depends on your flight arrival. Day 2 starts at 7:00 AM for Alexandria. Day 3 starts at 8:00 AM.

Can I add Luxor or Aswan to this tour? +

Not without adding days. Luxor is a 1-hour flight or 10-hour train from Cairo. Adding Luxor means a minimum of 5 days. If you want Luxor, book our 5-Day Cairo & Luxor tour instead.

Is the Giza Pyramids Sound and Light Show included? +

No. It's an optional evening activity, $35 per person. We can arrange it if you want. It's in English most nights.

October to April. Summer (May-September) is hot, especially at the Pyramids and in Alexandria. If you come in summer, start early and carry water.

Do I need a visa for Egypt? +

Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival for $25. Check with your embassy. We can provide an invitation letter if needed.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions? +

Yes. Tell us in advance. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and halal are all doable. The Alexandria seafood lunch can be swapped for a grill restaurant if you don't eat fish.

How much should I tip? +

Budget $10-15 per person per day for the guide and driver. Tips are not included in the tour price. Tipping is expected in Egypt, not optional.
