Three days in Cairo, no flights, no long drives, no rushing. This is the tour for travelers with a long weekend who want the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and the older pyramids at Saqqara and Dahshur — not the tour that tries to squeeze in Luxor in the same trip.

Most 3-day Cairo tours skip Saqqara and Dahshur. Those two sites are where pyramid-building started. The Step Pyramid at Saqqara is 4,700 years old and older than the Giza pyramids. The Red Pyramid at Dahshur is the first true pyramid ever built. If you only see Giza, you miss the beginning of the story.

You stay at Steigenberger Pyramids both nights, 10 minutes from the Giza plateau.

What you actually see

Day 1 — Giza. Giza Plateau at 8 AM when gates open. Three pyramids (Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure), the Sphinx, and the Valley Temple. Then the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) — 2.5 hours with the Tutankhamun galleries and the grand staircase. Overnight at Steigenberger Pyramids.

Day 2 — Islamic & Coptic Cairo. Citadel of Saladin and the Alabaster Mosque in the morning. Then Coptic Cairo (Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue). Lunch. Afternoon at Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Overnight at Steigenberger Pyramids.

Day 3 — Saqqara, Dahshur & Memphis. Step Pyramid at Saqqara (the first pyramid ever built), then the Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid at Dahshur. You can enter the Red Pyramid (free, but the tunnel is tight and steep). Short stop at Memphis, the ancient capital. Back to the hotel or airport by 4 PM.

What’s different about this tour

Most travel agencies in Cairo run the same 3-day package: Giza, Egyptian Museum, Khan el-Khalili, Old Cairo. They skip Saqqara and Dahshur because they’re 45 minutes south and the tour buses don’t go there. We go there on Day 3.

Saqqara is quiet. There are tourists but it’s nothing like Giza. You can walk around the Step Pyramid complex and actually hear yourself think. The Imhotep Museum on site (small, air-conditioned) has the oldest stone-carved statues in Egypt.

Dahshur is even quieter. It’s a military zone, so access is controlled. You need a permit (we handle it). The Red Pyramid is the third-largest pyramid in Egypt, after Khufu and Khafre at Giza. You can enter it — free with your ticket. The passage is tight (bent over, 60 meters) and steep, but at the end is an empty burial chamber that smells like the desert.

The hotel

Steigenberger Pyramids (Cairo, 2 nights). 5-star, pyramid views from some rooms. Pool, standard hotel breakfast buffet. 10 minutes from the Giza plateau. 45 minutes from downtown Cairo in normal traffic, 90 minutes in bad traffic.

If you’d rather stay downtown (Kempinski Nile Hotel or Four Seasons Nile Plaza), we can swap. Rates differ — ask before booking.

Honest notes

Saqqara and Dahshur are outdoor sites with almost no shade. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and more water than you think you need. In summer, start at 7 AM.

The Red Pyramid passage at Dahshur is tight — 60 meters bent over, then 60 meters back. If you’re claustrophobic or have back problems, skip the interior. The outside is still worth the stop.

The GEM is enormous. We allocate about 2.5 hours, which covers the Tutankhamun galleries and the main highlights. If you want more time, tell us and we’ll cut Khan el-Khalili shorter.

Day 2 is the busiest day. If you want to slow down, skip Khan el-Khalili — it’s the least essential stop. Coptic Cairo is the better half of the day.

Who this is for

  • Travelers with only 3 days in Cairo
  • People who’ve already seen Giza and want Saqqara + Dahshur
  • Anyone who wants depth over distance — one city, done properly
  • Travelers connecting through Cairo who can extend a stopover

Who this is not for

  • Travelers who want Luxor or Aswan (book the 5-day version)
  • Anyone who wants a Nile cruise
  • Families with very young kids (Day 3 involves a lot of walking on sand)
  • People who want pool time and slow mornings
Day 1 Arrival — Giza Pyramids & Grand Egyptian Museum

8:00 AM — Meet and assist at Cairo International Airport. Our rep holds a sign with your name, handles visa paperwork, and drives you to Steigenberger Pyramids. Transfer takes 25 minutes if you land before 4 PM, 45 minutes after.

Check-in, quick change, out by 10:00 AM.

Giza Plateau. Your guide handles tickets. Three pyramids (Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure), the Great Sphinx, and the Valley Temple. Bring a hat and water — no shade on the plateau.

12:30 PM — Lunch at a local restaurant near the plateau. Koshari, grilled chicken, or a mixed grill.

2:00 PM — Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Allow 2.5 hours. Tutankhamun galleries are the main draw. The grand staircase has a view over the Pyramids through the glass wall. Air-conditioned — a relief after the plateau.

5:00 PM — Back at the hotel. Evening free. If you want the Sound & Light Show at the Pyramids, we can arrange it (extra $35).

Day 2 Islamic & Coptic Cairo — Citadel, Old Cairo, Khan el-Khalili

8:00 AM — Hotel pickup.

8:30 AM — Citadel of Saladin. The Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali is the main building. Shoes off, women cover shoulders. The terrace has a 180-degree view of Cairo. On a clear day, you can see the Pyramids.

10:30 AM — Drive down to Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo). The Hanging Church, the Church of St. Sergius, and the Ben Ezra Synagogue. Small streets, real community, no vendors yelling at you.

12:30 PM — Lunch at a local restaurant in Old Cairo. Egyptian home-style food — molokhia, roast chicken, rice.

2:00 PM — Khan el-Khalili bazaar. It's a tourist market. Real Cairenes shop elsewhere. But it's worth one visit for the atmosphere and the coffee at El Fishawy. Don't buy anything on the first price.

4:30 PM — Back at the hotel. Evening free.

Stay: Steigenberger Pyramids Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Day 3 Saqqara, Dahshur & Memphis — Departure

7:30 AM — Hotel pickup. Drive south to Saqqara (45 minutes).

8:30 AM — Saqqara. The Step Pyramid of Djoser — 4,700 years old, the first pyramid ever built. The complex around it is being restored, but the pyramid itself is intact. Allow 1.5 hours. Don't skip the Imhotep Museum on-site — it's small, air-conditioned, and has the oldest stone statues in Egypt.

10:30 AM — Drive to Dahshur (15 minutes).

10:45 AM — Dahshur. Two pyramids here: the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid. The Red Pyramid is the first true pyramid (smooth sides, no bend). You can enter it — free with your ticket. The passage is tight (60 meters bent over) and steep, but at the end is an empty burial chamber. 1.5 hours on site.

12:30 PM — Drive to Memphis (15 minutes).

12:45 PM — Memphis. The ancient capital of Egypt. Mostly ruins now, but there's a large alabaster sphinx and a colossal statue of Ramses II lying on its back. 30 minutes. Quick photo stop.

1:30 PM — Lunch at a local restaurant on the way back.

3:00 PM — Back at the hotel or transfer to Cairo International Airport for departure. If your flight is late evening, we drop you at the airport directly.

Is this a private tour or a group tour? +

Private. Your own vehicle, driver, and Egyptologist guide. No strangers, no fixed group schedule.

Why does this tour include Saqqara and Dahshur but not others? +

Most 3-day Cairo tours skip Saqqara and Dahshur because they're 45 minutes south and tour buses don't go there. We include them because that's where pyramid-building actually started. The Step Pyramid at Saqqara is 4,700 years old — older than the Giza pyramids. The Red Pyramid at Dahshur is the first true pyramid ever built. If you only see Giza, you miss the beginning of the story.

Can I enter the Red Pyramid at Dahshur? +

Yes, free with your ticket. The passage is tight — 60 meters bent over, then a steep staircase, then 60 meters back. If you're claustrophobic or have back problems, skip it. The outside view is still worth the stop.

Is Saqqara safe to visit? +

Yes. It's a regular tourist site with security, and the area is heavily patrolled. Dahshur is inside a military zone — we handle the permit for you. Standard procedure, no issues.

What time does the tour start each day? +

Day 1 depends on your flight arrival. Day 2 starts at 8:00 AM. Day 3 starts at 7:30 AM to avoid the midday heat at Saqqara.

Can I add Luxor or a Nile cruise to this tour? +

Not without adding days. Luxor is a 1-hour flight from Cairo. Adding Luxor means a minimum of 5 days. If you want Luxor, book the 5-day Cairo & Luxor version.

Is the Sound & Light Show at the Pyramids included? +

No. It's optional, $35 per person. We can arrange it on Day 1 or Day 2 evening. It's in English most nights.

What's the best time of year for this tour? +

October to April. Saqqara and Dahshur have almost no shade, so summer (May-September) is brutal. If you come in summer, we start at 7 AM and finish by 1 PM.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions? +

Yes. Tell us in advance. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and halal are all doable. Lunch restaurants will adjust.

How much should I tip? +

Budget $10-15 per person per day for the guide and driver. Tips are not included in the price. In Egypt, tipping is expected, not optional.
