What is the etiquette for visiting someone’s home?

When visiting someone’s home in Egypt, it is polite to follow these etiquette guidelines:

  • Bring a small gift, such as sweets, pastries, fruit, or flowers, especially if it’s your first visit.
  • Dress conservatively (cover shoulders, legs, and avoid tight/revealing clothes).
  • Remove your shoes when entering if your host does so or requests it.
  • Greet everyone warmly; a handshake and a smile are customary (wait for your host to offer a greeting to women).
  • Accept offers of tea, coffee, or food; it is polite to try what is served and thank your host.
  • Compliment the home or meal; gracious words are highly appreciated.
  • Leave your seat only when invited; your host will signal when the visit/mealtime is over.
  • Thank your host sincerely before leaving.

Respect for elders, hospitality, and good manners are deeply valued in Egyptian homes.
